Youth Participation
Young leaders
A young leader is a member of Girlguiding who helps out at a Rainbow, Brownie or Guide unit, often on a weekly basis. They get involved in planning activities, running games, etc. and are valuable members of the leadership team. Young leaders are aged 14-17 years old. Young leaders may also be members of a Ranger unit but this is not a requirement of being a young leader.
If you’re aged between 14-17 and volunteering in a unit, you can start discovering and exploring your leadership skills with the young leader development programme; a personalised journey that empowers you to become the leader you want to be.
The modules you can work towards are:
Badges
When you have completed four of the modules, your leader can order you a special badge. There's a second badge when you complete four more and a third badge if you complete all 12 modules. What's next?
Once you turn 16 you can start working on your leader development programme (LDP). That's the qualification that adults complete in order to become leaders in their unit. Lots of the work you have carried out as part of your young leader development programme will help prepare you for completing your LDP. Although you can't take on this role until you turn 18, you can work on the programme at the age of 16/17 meaning you could be a qualified leader on your 18th birthday! Ask your local commissioner for more information if you would like to take this next step. You can work on the LDP even if you haven't completed the young leader development programme. |

Peer Education
4 (peer education) is Girlguiding's innovative programme that trains members aged 14-26 to empower themselves and others to make a difference in the lives of girls throughout the UK. Peer educators are 14 to 26 year olds who help Brownies, Guides and Rangers think and talk about issues that are important to them. As young people, they use their own experience to bring the subject to life. It works because girls are eager to listen to their peers who share similar life experiences.
Peer educator run fun and interactive sessions for the girls, and the leaders don't need to plan or deliver any of the session.
