Student volunteering
Are you a student in Gloucestershire?
We welcome student volunteers from all local universities and colleges, and have a dedicated student coordinator who will help match you with your perfect volunteering opportunity in the county.
Volunteering opportunities for students in Gloucestershire
We have lots of exciting opportunities to join Girlguiding Gloucestershire as a student volunteer, and welcome volunteers of all genders. Student volunteers will typically join one of our groups, volunteering at their weekly meetings. Age groups are Rainbows (4-7), Brownies (7-10), Guides (10-14) or Rangers (14-18).
If you can’t commit to weekly volunteering, we also offer flexible volunteering (perhaps every other week), or other options including helping groups with admin, becoming an activity instructor at our county HQ, or offering particular skills on an ad-hoc basis. We can have a chat to help find the best option for you.

Benefits of volunteering with Girlguiding Gloucestershire while you study
Our groups benefit hugely from student volunteers, but there are loads of benefits to you too:
- Have fun and try new things. The best thing about volunteering with Girlguiding is how much fun you have! Our student volunteers have loads of opportunities to make new friends, try exciting new activities, earn fun badges, and get an all-important break from studying.
- Boost your CV. Volunteering with Girlguiding looks great on your CV. You will be able to develop vital skills employers look for, including teamwork, organisation, leadership and communication. It will also demonstrate that you are reliable, trustworthy, and can work independently. Getting involved with Girlguiding while you study is also great for building new connections and feeling part of your local community.
- Gain skills and qualifications. As well as the safeguarding training all volunteers are required to complete, you will also have the opportunity to attend first aid training, complete Girlguiding’s leader development programme, and access a whole range of trainings on different topics. You can also sign up for awards including the Duke of Edinburgh and Queen’s Guide award.
- Join Inspire. All Girlguiding members age 18-30 are automatically part of our county Inspire group, where you will have the opportunity to attend events, make new friends and work on different badges, awards and qualifications. For more information on Inspire, email [email protected]
The volunteer registration process
All new Girlguiding volunteers need to fill out a short online registration – we will usually arrange for you to have a taster volunteering session first.
As part of the process, you will be asked for two references. Your referees will be asked to fill out a simple online questionnaire, and we’ll let you know how to pick two suitable people to fill it out. You will also be required to complete our safeguarding eLearning, which can be accessed online at a time to suit you. Finally, we will carry out a DBS check. If you’ve been a Girlguiding member previously, either as a young member or volunteer, let us know, and we’ll be able to track down your previous Girlguiding membership record. This will save time when registering you as a volunteer, and may mean certain checks don’t need to be done again. |
